Cedral’s commitment to sustainable building materials
Reduce the ecological footprint of your home with Cedral. Our fibre-cement slates and sidings are composed of naturally available materials that last you a lifetime. Our products are disassembly proof and recyclable, and produced with as little energy, water, transport and waste as possible. This makes Cedral a smart choice.
A long history of sustainability
For Cedral, sustainability started already over 100 years ago. From the outset, fibre-cement building materials were stronger, allowing builders to use fewer natural resources to reach the same performance. And lighter products also have a smaller transport footprint. But our green journey hasn’t finished yet. We continue to develop increasingly smart and resilient solutions and services for your home. That is our way to help you improve your living comfort, without jeopardising the future of our planet. We systematically challenge ourselves to become more circular in our activities, by actively reducing, reusing and recycling wherever possible.
Fibre cement: the environmental choice
The Cedral slates, boards and sidings are made of high-quality fibre cement. This composite material is composed of commonly available ingredients that are low in toxicity: cement, mineral raw materials (silica sand), water and a selection of natural and synthetic fibres to increase strength. Cedral mainly uses locally produced components for its products, to reduce the need for transport. We have optimised the production process as to minimise the energy and water used. What’s more, we actively reduce waste, and wherever possible we re-use the refuse of the production process. When disposing fibre-cement slates or weatherboards at the end of their long lifespan, they will completely disintegrate into the non-toxic components they were made from.
Less is more, longer is better
As we pointed out, all Cedral fibre-cement building materials are thin and lightweight, but very robust. That allows you to use less material for more quality and performance when it comes to the outer shell of your building. As such, Cedral is ideally suited for lightweight construction and helps you to achieve an overall low carbon footprint for your home. The strength and quality of Cedral products deliver a long life expectancy that goes well beyond 50 years. This durability considerably pushes back the need of replacing your roof or façade, making Cedral a sustainable choice. The fibre-cement slates, boards and sidings require little maintenance to last longer. A good wash with water and biodegradable soap, is all it takes to remove dust and dirt. Unlike some other roof or facade materials, Cedral products do not require environmentally questionable cleaning products, regular repainting or (toxic) treatments against moss, mould, rust, corrosion, pests or fire.
A green lifecycle
Sustainability goes beyond the material and the manufacturing process. When looking at the entire lifecycle, Cedral’s weatherboards and slates perform extremely well. For all its products, quantified environmental data is available in the Environmental Product Declarations, based on a thorough lifecycle assessment. External certification agencies testify that, once installed correctly according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, Cedral needs no further maintenance, repair, replacement or refurbishment during the full life span of the product. Installation losses depend on the building design and user preferences, but generally do not exceed 5%. And the Cedral fixing methods are disassembly proof so you can dismantle the slates or sidings and give them a second somewhere else.
